Frank R. Wise

Portraits by Frank Wise

As a youngster, I was always drawing or doodling. One of my fondest memories is of when, in the fifth grade, I sent Red Skelton several drawing/design representations of the characters on The Red Skelton show. Mr. Skelton was kind enough to send me an autographed photograph in response. That kindness always impressed me, and I still have his photo!

I started taking art classes in high school. Others began to recognize my talent, and their admiration flattered and encouraged me, but I still didn’t consider art as a career. Art became more of a focal point in my life after a year-and-a-half of college and four years in the Air Force. After serving in the Air Force, I returned to college and got serious about pursuing an art degree. In 1976 I got a BFA in printmaking from Emporia State University, but had no idea of what to do with it! I was doing pencil portraits of celebrities in my spare time, and found that people wanted to purchase them. Still struggling to decide on a career, I decided to go back to college again and pursue a teaching certificate.

I started teaching high school art in 1979 and retired in 2007. During my teaching career, I continued to delight in creating pencil portraits of people. In 1987 I received a master’s degree in painting. I still enjoy painting various subjects from time to time, but pencil remains my favorite medium.

About ten years ago a former student gave my name to a woman who wanted a small pencil portrait of a friend’s dog. That began my expansion into pet portraits. Another friend familiar with my work brought me to the web site you are on now. I thoroughly enjoy the smile my pet drawings bring to peoples’ faces. I know my portraits provide a lasting memory of pets they love.

So, if I create a drawing for you, I am confident it will bring a smile to your face and a happy moment to your heart.
